After being restricted due to COVID-19 for months, Long Islanders of all ages are finally able to enjoy their walks, jogs and bike rides.

While walking or riding a bicycle can bring a lot of health benefits, it can pose just as many dangers to your safety. Unfortunately, according to the CDC:

  • “[i]n 2017, 5,977 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in the United States. That’s about one death every 88 minutes;
  • additionally, an estimated 137,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments for nonfatal crash-related injuries in 2017.2 Per trip, pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to be killed in a car crash.”

What causes these disturbing statistics? Usually, it is distracted driving, driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, speeding, violation of traffic control devices and hit and run incidents.

Common injuries, resulting from pedestrian knockdowns and bicycle accidents include foot, knee, ankle, leg and hip trauma, fractures, torn ligaments and tendons, dislocations, neck and back injuries, spinal cord injuries, concussions and traumatic brain injuries.

To prevent such accidents, Walker & Mackenzie, P.C. encourages everyone to follow these basic safety guidelines:

  • Pay attention to your surroundings;
  • Avoid looking at your phone or utilizing headphones while walking/riding a bicycle;
  • Avoid walking or riding a bicycle if you consumed any drugs or alcohol as your judgment and/or coordination may be impaired;
  • be visible: carry a flashlight, wear reflective or colorful clothing;
  • cross streets within designated crosswalks;
  • walk on sidewalks;
  • if no sidewalk is available, walk/ride bicycle on the shoulder facing traffic;
  • stay alert.
